We asked University of Colorado football coach Dan Hawkins to . . .

Fill in the blanks

If I were overseeing the NCAA, I would make spring football more . . .

"Encompassing. One of the things I don't like about football at this level is that there are a lot of really fun, cool things you can do with your team at lower levels that you can't do here. You can't do as much team-building, personal- experience kind of things because you've got all these rules and regulations. . . . It shouldn't be all football - get your guys on a bus, go somewhere and do a ropes course, stuff like that."

When I watched Boise State defeat Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl, I had a hard time . . .

"Explaining my emotions to my wife. I was happy for (the Broncos), I was proud of them, but at the same time . . . you realize all the little things that go into putting that thing together, and it gives you even that much more emotion to get your current guys to that (level)."

I went sky diving last offseason because . . .

"I wanted to be an example to our team to not be afraid to fail, to take a risk, to get out of their comfort zone."

I'm running a marathon this offseason in Australia because . . .

"Again, I'm trying to be an example of, 'Do the unthinkable, everything's possible, reinvent yourself by getting better.' It's all those concepts."

If I'm stranded on an island without my playbook, I'll be studying . . .

"Personal development (Hawkins recently has read The Alchemist, a fable about following your dream by Paulo Coelho, and the Seven Storey Mountain, the autobiography of Thomas Merton, a Trappist monk.)"

The downside of a 2-10 debut season is offset by . . .

"Going through adversity, if done right, really solidifies the foundation for success - again, if it's done right."

I've found Boulder a great place to . . .

"Live. Yeah, live."
