CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Bobcats coach Bernie Bickerstaff challenged injured forward Sean May on Friday to lose weight and get into better shape before next season.
May, the 13th overall pick in the 2005 draft, has been plagued by a right knee injury that required surgery to remove cartilage last season. He then developed a bone bruise in the knee in January. May has missed 30 of the past 35 games and said he'll likely sit out the rest of the season.
"The self-discipline is going to be really, really important," Bickerstaff said.
May has struggled to stay on the court in the NBA. He played in only 23 games last year and 39 this season, with Bickerstaff suggesting part of the reason is May's weight and work ethic.
May, who said he weighs 265 pounds, acknowledged he needs to lose at least 10 pounds and get into better shape this summer.
"In terms of taking care of your diet and being in the best possible shape. Not coming in good shape, coming in in great shape," May said after working out in the weight room before the game Friday. "What he means by discipline is, just taking the initiative, do the work, make sure I do the work for myself and the franchise."
TISDALE CANCER: Former Oklahoma basketball great Wayman Tisdale is undergoing treatment for a cancerous cyst discovered below his right knee after he broke his leg.
Tisdale, who played 12 seasons with the Pacers, Kings and Suns, disclosed the cancer earlier this week on his Web site. He said the prognosis for his recovery is excellent.
"I am so pleased to report that my recovery will be 100 percent and that I have been told that I am otherwise cancer-free," Tisdale said.
ETC.: The Mavericks will sign 44-year-old forward Kevin Willis to a 10-day contract Monday if he passes a physical. . . . Trail Blazers forward Zach Randolph had surgery on his right hand and will miss the rest of the season. . . . Knicks forward Quentin Richardson will miss the rest of the season after having back surgery. . . . Hornets guard Peja Stojakovic said that a setback in his rehab from back surgery will delay his return to the court.
