NEW YORK - Yankees fans wanted to know Tuesday whether owner George Steinbrenner will keep longtime manager Joe Torre or let him go after 12 straight playoff appearances.
No answers yet.
"Have some patience. Things take time. There will be a process and we'll work through that, and it will lead us where it leads us," general manager Brian Cashman said. "My speculation is I'm not going to have anything to report in the coming days."
BELL TO WHITE SOX: Former Rockies manager Buddy Bell has accepted a position as minor league field coordinator of the Chicago White Sox, the Rocky Mountain News has learned. Bell was a field coordinator with the White Sox from 1991 to 1993.
Bell most recently managed the Royals but announced Aug. 1 he would step down at the end of the season.
RODRIGUEZ'S AGENT TALKS: Agent Scott Boras hinted the Yankees' Alex Rodriguez will opt out of the final three seasons of his contract and seek a deal in the free-agent market that will lock him up for more than a decade.
Boras negotiated Rodriguez's record 10-year, $252 million agreement with the Rangers before the 2001 season, a contract the Yankees took over. His next deal could last for more than a decade, Boras said.
ETC.: The Tigers exercised an option on catcher Ivan Rodriguez's contract, retaining him for a fifth season for another $13 million. . . . Manager Charlie Manuel and the Phillies agreed to a two-year contract with a club option for 2010. . . . Cardinals manager Tony La Russa will wait for a general manager to be hired before deciding whether to return for a 13th season, team spokesman Brian Bartow said. . . . The Giants fired hitting coach Joe Lefebvre and first-base coach Willie Upshaw. . . . Longtime Astros radio announcer Milo Hamilton, 80, was recovering in a Houston hospital after suffering a heart attack over the weekend.
