Rockies manager Clint Hurdle served a one-game suspension Wednesday night for his run-in with umpire Jerry Layne in the ninth inning of Friday's 7-3, 10-inning victory at Arizona.
Hurdle argued with Layne that Arizona first baseman Tony Clark was not on the bag when he had to lay out to catch a throw from shortstop Stephen Drew on a groundball by Troy Tulowitzki.
Hurdle was suspended and fined for bumping Layne and for spraying the umpire with saliva. Hurdle bumped Layne twice while following the umpire, who stopped quickly.
"I used too many words with 'p's' and 's's'," Hurdle said. "The contact, Jerry would agree, was incidental, but it happened twice."
Hurdle said he ran into Layne when the umpire walked away from him and Hurdle followed Layne, then Layne stopped.
"I would like to be (in the dugout), but I also needed to be where I was when I got in the argument," Hurdle said.
MEDICAL UPDATE
Right-hander Taylor Buchholz got a clean report from a magnetic resonance imaging exam on his right elbow. Buchholz has been shut down for a week because of tightness in the elbow. He was given a shot and is expected to be back in the team's pitching plans by the time the Rockies open their series Monday at Philadelphia.
WHAT A RELIEF
3.91 ERA for Rockies relievers. The only time in franchise history Rockies relievers have finished a season with an ERA below 4.50 was when the relievers compiled a 3.65 mark in 1998.
