NO DEAL

The Rockies checked out the trade market, didn't like what they saw and wound up letting Tuesday's deadline for making a deal without having to get waivers on a player quietly pass.

They went to the final minutes in talks with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays about acquiring right-handed reliever Dan Wheeler in a deal that would have included Jeff Baker, but nothing came of it.

The Rockies also inquired about right-hander Matt Morris, but the San Francisco Giants were able to get the Pittsburgh Pirates to take Morris and absorb the nearly $14 million remaining on the contract that goes through next year.

"We had a lot of things working over the last few days, but in the end, there was nothing that came together that we felt would make our club better," general manager Dan O'Dowd said in a statement.

Manager Clint Hurdle said ownership had approved adding salary, but "we were offered coal and (other teams) wanted gold nuggets (in return)."

NUMBERS GAME

.625 winning percent-age for the Rockies in July, second- best in franchise history. They went 15-9. The Rockies had a .643 winning percentage (18-10) in 2004 and a .607 mark (17-11) in 1995.

SIDELINED

Right-hander Rodrigo Lopez was diagnosed with a torn flexor muscle in his right elbow, sending him to the disabled list for the second time this season.

Right-hander Jason Hirsh, who has been on the disabled list with a sprained right ankle, will be activated and replace Lopez in the rotation for Thursday's series finale in Florida.
