SIDELINED
Left-handed pitcher Brian Fuentes was placed on the disabled list, retroactive to July 4. With the pitching staff rested after the four-day All-Star break, and because of center fielder Willy Taveras' uncertain status, the Rockies brought up infielder Omar Quintanilla from Triple-A Colorado Springs. Fuentes could be activated for the game Thursday in Washington.
Manager Clint Hurdle said Fuentes will throw batting practice today and could make a rehabilitation assignment in time to be ready for the opening game of the four-game series with the Nationals.
Taveras has been bothered by a strained quadriceps. He has shown improvement, and the Rockies want to see how he responds this weekend. Hurdle said he will use Taveras "if I am put in a corner."
The key is, if the Rockies don't use Taveras in a game and place him on the DL, they can backdate the move to last Monday.
NUMBERS GAME
17 consecutive days of games for the Rockies, beginning Friday night. It's their longest stretch without an off day this season. This is the third time in four years the Rockies have started the schedule after the All-Star break by playing 17 consecutive days.
IN THE FOLD
Right-hander Connor Graham, the Rockies' fifth-round draft choice from Miami (Ohio), agreed to terms. The contract will be finalized early next week and Graham will report to short-season Single-A Tri-City. With the signing of Graham, the Rockies have signed their top 13 selections from the draft last month.
HE SAID IT
"He can be very, very nasty and his command has never been an issue. I'm definitely looking to him in (closer situations)."
Hurdle, on right-hander Manny Corpas.
