ROSTER ADJUSTMENT
Right-hander Jason Hirsh, above, is on the disabled list and veteran Matt Herges is back in the majors. Hirsh suffered a sprained right ankle while on the bases Monday. Hirsh's injury figures to get Taylor Buchholz at least one start after the All-Star break because Hirsh won't be eligible to be activated until the sixth game after the break.
Herges, who was with the Rockies for two games earlier in the season, had a 1.27 ERA and .194 average against in 32 games with Triple-A Colorado Springs.
SCRATCHED
Second baseman Jamey Carroll was in position to start three consecutive games, but he showed up Tuesday with a sore wrist he apparently suffered while making a diving play Monday.
Kazuo Matsui was at second base against left-hander Jason Vargas and went 5-for-5.
HE SAID IT
"You have a large list and you start trimming it down and down. (Brad Hawpe) made the list of guys that you had to give serious consideration, but when it came down to picking the club, there was really one spot for an outfielder. We felt like in the San Francisco ballpark with the three outfielders that were going to play the second half of the game possibly, there was no true center fielder. So we wanted to pick a center fielder and went to Aaron Rowand."
Tony La Russa, St. Louis Cardinals manager, who will manage the National League All-Star team.
