NUMBERS GAME

12 runs by the Rockies in their win Wednesday equaled the fourth largest run total for an NL team at Fenway Park. Atlanta won 15-2 on Aug. 30, 1997. Los Angeles won 14-5 on June 12, 2004. Atlanta won 14-0 on May 19 this year. The Cardinals won 12-3 in the World Series on Oct. 10, 1946.

TRAVEL PLANS

With the Rockies playing a night game in Boston, then hosting Tampa Bay at Coors Field tonight, manager Clint Hurdle said he plans to start Jamey Carroll, below, in place of Kazuo Matsui at second, wanting to avoid any flare-up of Matsui's back problems after the long flight. Hurdle said there has been some consideration of giving first baseman Todd Helton the day off, but he is having second thoughts because he doesn't like resting Matsui and Helton on the same day.

Yorvit Torrealba started all three games in Boston at catcher, but Chris Iannetta will start tonight. Right-hander Rodrigo Lopez, who will start tonight, flew home Thursday afternoon to avoid an anticipated 3 a.m. team charter arrival.

"We want to try and give some guys a chance to catch their breath," Hurdle said.

STAR STUFF

6 players from Double-A Tulsa (Okla.) made the Texas League All-Star team: shortstop Jonathan Herrera, outfielder Matt Miller, and right-handed pitchers Jarrett Grube, Juan Morillo, Steven Register and Greg Reynolds. Reynolds has been sidelined with shoulder tightness but is expected to return to the rotation Tuesday. Single-A Modesto placed right-handers Brandon Hynick and Andrew Johnson on the California League roster for its All-Star Game against the Carolina League.
