Three keys
Key moments in the Rockies' 15-2 loss to San Francisco at Coors Field on Sunday afternoon:
1 Fred Lewis' first home run in the majors, a three-run shot with two out in the fourth, gave the Giants a 4-0 lead. It came with runners on first and third after Taylor Buchholz struck out pitcher Matt Cain for the second out.
2 With two out in the fifth, Buchholz gave up consecutive run-scoring hits - Kevin Frandsen's triple and Cain's single - and reliever Tom Martin gave up a triple to Lewis that gave the Giants an 8-0 lead.
3 The Giants sent 11 batters to the plate in the seventh and had eight hits, seven off Denny Bautista, who was optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs after the game. He retired one of the eight batters he faced.
Etc.
The Rockies have lost four of their past five on Mother's Day and are 6-9 all time on the day. . . . Sunday was the Rockies' first home game on Mother's Day since 2001. . . . Lewis became the fourth player in major league history to hit for the cycle that included his first career home run. . . . Lewis was the 22nd player in Giants history to hit for the cycle and is the first left-handed hitter to achieve the feat since the franchise moved from New York before the 1958 season. . . . It was the seventh cycle at Coors Field. . . . Rockies rookie catcher Chris Iannetta was hitless in 10 at-bats before getting an RBI single in the ninth. . . . Despite missing five games last week because of a groin injury, Rockies leadoff hitter Willy Taveras has a .432 average (19-for-44) with seven walks and five RBI in his past 11 games, increasing his average from .192 to a season-best .302. . . . Second baseman Kazuo Matsui, out since April 14 with back spasms, traveled to extended spring training in Tucson and today is scheduled to play three innings and get four at-bats in a game. He's scheduled to play five innings and get six at-bats Tuesday. The Rockies want him to play seven innings before going to Colorado Springs. Manager Clint Hurdle said Matsui is "somewhere within 10 days" of rejoining the Rockies. . . . Pitcher Rodrigo Lopez, sidelined since April 18 with an inflamed forearm, will go to extended spring training today and is scheduled to pitch three innings or 45 pitches Tuesday. Then the team will decide whether he stays or joins one of the minor league affiliates.
