GAME DAY
Second baseman Kaz Matsui was out of the lineup for the Rockies' 5-2 victory against Oakland on Thursday at Hi Corbett Field because of a strained right forefoot. He suffered the injury when he stepped on a baseball during a workout Wednesday. . . . Catcher Yorvit Torrealba walked, scored one run and singled home another. . . . Center fielder Steve Finley was ejected when he argued a check swing third strike with home plate umpire Tony Randazzo in the third inning. Finley was called out on strikes in the first. He is 0-for-8 in his past three games. . . . Right-handed relievers LaTroy Hawkins and Manny Corpas maintained their 0.00 spring training ERAs with one scoreless inning apiece.
BENCHED
Walt Weiss and Vinny Castilla, special assistants to Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd, will not be allowed in uniform on the bench during games this year. Weiss has been on the bench for home games the past five years, but a National League West team filed a complaint with Major League Baseball that the Rockies were exceeding the coaching limits, and the Rockies were informed they will be fined $10,000 each time Weiss or Castilla is in uniform.
Indications are Arizona filed the complaint because former Rockies players (such as Shawn Estes and Eric Byrnes) who have played for the Diamondbacks told Arizona officials Weiss steals signs from the bench.
RUNNING
3 bases were stolen by the Rockies on Thursday, giving them 24 in 27 attempts during spring training. Manager Clint Hurdle has given most players a green light to see how they react. The team plans to be more aggressive on the bases this season. They have not had 100 stolen bases in any of the past four seasons.
