Eric DuBose, a former first-round draft choice of Oakland, and Mike Gallo, a member of the 2004 and 2005 postseason roster with Houston, have signed minor league contracts with the Rockies, adding to the pool of left-handed pitchers who will be in big-league camp in February.

"They have both shown they can compete at this level," Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd said. "They give us some depth and versatility."

Rockies special assistant Mark Wiley was DuBose's pitching coach with Baltimore in 2004.

DuBose, 29, was 9-15 with a 5.21 ERA in 52 games, 27 starts, over the past four seasons with the Orioles. He was bothered by shoulder problems in the early part of his career but underwent surgery in 2000 to repair labrum damage and shrink the shoulder capsule.

Gallo, who turns 30 on April 2, split last season between Triple-A Round Rock and the Astros, but was a situational lefty for the Astros the two previous seasons. He played for Rockies scouting advisor Dave Snow at Long Beach State University.

STILL TALKING: The Rockies are continuing efforts to sign center fielder Darin Erstad, even with the acquisition of Willy Taveras. The Rockies think Erstad could be an impact addition if he is healthy, but his health has been an issue in recent seasons.

The Rockies also are continuing to negotiate with catcher Rod Barajas, who would compete with Chris Iannetta and Yorvit Torrealba for the two big-league catching jobs.
