The University of Colorado's Solar Decathlon team beat MIT and other top engineering schools in a competition of solar homes.
The CU team's project took third place in engineering and finished seventh overall among universities from around the world.
The team shipped its solar house on railroad cars to Washington, D.C., this month for a display before judges and the public on the National Mall.
"Of course, we would have liked to have placed higher, but we're glad to have made it this far," said Chad Corbin, student project manager for the CU team.
The team had been working on the project for two years.
Germany's Technische Universitaet Darmstadt took first place overall.
The contest was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
Xcel Energy will display the CU team's entry when it gets back to Colorado to show the public the possibilities in solar energy.
