A former CU student body president announced his candidacy yesterday for the school's board of regents, and already is drawing key endorsements.
Joe Neguse, a Democrat, is running for the University of Colorado Board of Regents' seat from the 2nd Congressional District, which includes Boulder.
The seat is being vacated by Regent Cindy Carlisle, who is running to replace state Sen. Ron Tupa, D-Boulder, who is term-limited in 2008.
Neguse, 23, is barely out the gate, but he has already earned the endorsement of Colorado House Speaker Andrew Romanoff, D-Denver, and former state Sen. Dorothy Rupert who has been tapped to serve as his campaign treasurer.
"Joe is the type of young person who inspires people because of his energy and know-how," said Rupert. "He has passion for the university and a firm understanding of state governance."
So far, Neguse faces former CU student Curt Williams of Adams County in the Democratic primary.
Neguse, who graduated from Boulder in 2005 and now attends CU law school, said he will deliver a student's point of view to the regents.
"I will bring a student perspective to the board, which has been missing for quite some time," he said.
If elected, he would become the first black to serve the 2nd
District and the second to serve on the board since 1994.
