A 5-year-old boy on a bicycle died Thursday after being hit by a sport utility vehicle driven by a teenager.
The accident happened about 4:30 p.m. at East Cornell Avenue and South Alton Court in Denver's Hampden Heights neighborhood, near the home of the 5-year-old.
"A father was getting his kids ready to go for a bike ride, and the 5-year-old exited the garage," Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.
The SUV was heading north on South Alton Court when the boy was hit.
He was pronounced dead at Swedish Medical Center.
Police withheld the names of the victim and 16-year-old driver. The district attorney's office will decide whether charges will be filed.
"All around, it's just a tragic situation, with a young driver and a young kid," Jackson said.
Police questioned the teenage driver, who had a passenger with him.
The driver's mother told CBS 4 News that her son said the child rolled out from a driveway right as he was driving by, and that he wasn't able to avoid him.
