Commerce City 6th-grader listed in critical condition at Children's Hospital

An 11-year-old Commerce City girl was critically injured and her 19-year-old brother suffered a broken arm after a Pontiac Grand Prix reportedly ran a red light Friday morning and slammed -into their compact car.

Marcus King was driving his sister, Mercedes, to school when the accident happened at 7:31 a.m., Commerce City police Sgt. Joe Sandoval said in a statement.

Mercedes, a sixth-grader at Kearney Middle School, was on life support and listed in critical condition Friday night at Children's Hospital. Marcus King was treated for a broken arm at a hospital.

Investigators said the Kings' Dodge Neon was westbound on East 60th Avenue when it entered the intersection at Monaco Street on a green light. The Grand Prix driven by Yesica Moreno, 24, was southbound on Monaco Street when the driver allegedly ran the red light, crushing the Dodge's passenger side where Mercedes was sitting.

Moreno, of Commerce City, suffered no apparent injuries, police said.

All involved were wearing seat belts, and neither alcohol nor drug use is suspected as a factor, Sandoval said. The investigation was ongoing to determine whether charges will be filed.
