John Elway has succeeded as an NFL quarterback, a team owner and as a businessman. Now, the Hall of Famer is trying his hand at high school coaching.

Cherry Creek High School announced Wednesday that Elway will take over as quarterbacks coach. Elway's son, Jack, is the starting quarterback for the Bruins. Elway will be working as an unpaid volunteer.

"Both (Elway) and Jack are really excited about this opportunity," Cherry Creek coach Greg Critchett said. "We've been talking about it for about a year now, and finally, things sort of fell into place for us."

Jack Elway, who wears the same No. 7 his father wore during his 16 seasons as the Broncos' quarterback, completed 83 passes for 932 yards and one touchdown last season.

Cherry Creek went 5-4 during the regular season, then lost to Mullen in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs.

When asked about having his father as a coach, Jack Elway told MyFoxColorado.com: "It's nice to have him out here. I'm learning so much every day.

"It's all really small (what his dad is doing as a coach); you wouldn't expect it to make such a big difference, but it really does."

Critchett said John Elway is looking forward to the chance.

"I think that what's neat is John isn't doing it just for Jack or for the position," he said.

"He's looking to offer something to all of the other kids on the team."
