CENTENNIAL — Broncos wide receiver David Kircus, accused of punching a man in the face in May, was bound over to district court today on a felony assault charge.

Kircus will be in court Aug. 21 to enter a plea.

His accuser, Jeffrey Krieger, 24, took the stand today and recounted the events of the early morning hours of May 20 when he escorted Kircus from his home in Centennial. Krieger said he was punched in the face, suffering multiple fractures below his right eye.

Krieger said he never saw the punch coming.

"It was just a pop and a flash and I remember rolling on the ground," Krieger said.

He said the football player then taunted him by telling him, "You don't know what I'm capable of."

Kircus' attorney, Harvey Steinberg, painted a picture of a drunken Krieger and suggested that he was the aggressor, saying at one point Krieger had placed his hand on Kircus' arm as he led him out of the house.

Steinberg said his client never showed any signs of aggression that night.

Shortly after the case arose, Kircus said he had acted in self-defense and volunteered to take a lie detector test, which he passed, Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said.
