FREEZE AND THAW

School's out. Flowers are planted. Pools are open. But the weather, until the past few days, has been less than summery (OK, maybe that's not a word, but you know what we mean).

After freezing off body parts last week at a Little League Baseball game, Extra! decided to do some digging about Denver temperatures. Here's what we found on the National Weather Service Web site, crh.noaa.gov/den.

High temps for June

Date 2006 2007

6/1 81 67

6/2 92 73

6/3 94 75

6/4 90 79

6/5 94 84

6/6 95 84

6/7 98 69

6/8 92 75

6/9 88 84

6/10 91 90

6/11 92 92

The only record set so far this month has been a record low. At 5:44 a.m. Friday the temperature at Denver International Airport was 31 degrees, breaking the old record low of 37 degrees set in 1974. Friday also was the latest freeze on record and only the third time since 1872 that the temperature in Denver dipped below freezing in June.

So here's a piece of Extra! advice - keep your winter wear handy, just in case.

EXTRA! HOT CHILI

This just in from the chili cookoff circuit - winners were announced over the weekend at the Snowmass Chili Pepper and Brew Fest. If you're a chili connoisseur, you know the chili doesn't taste good unless it has a good name.

Some of Extra!'s favorites in the Snowmass competition: Pueblo Chernobyl Chili by George Lott, Charlie's Fire in a Bowl by Chuck Burdick and Dirty Little Piggy (um, really?) by Dan Beach.

Congrats to all the winners, and may we make a suggestion for next year? Extra! in front of anything sounds good!
