The 65-year-old man who became the first person to die in the 29-year history of the Bolder Boulder was a retired engineer who still did work for the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Friends described Ross "Jack" Lowe, who lived in Roxborough Park in unincorporated Douglas County with his wife Ellen, as an avid sailor and the best person to answer a question about the sport.

"If you asked him about something and he didn't know, he would do research and write a paper," friend and fellow sailor Bob Malouff, who owns Malouff Engineering, said Tuesday. "He was a very fair guy, too."

Lowe had just put his Catalina Capris 22 named "Mariah" in Chatfield Reservoir Friday.

"It's surprising to see a guy like that go," Malouff said. "He was always active, always going. He was touring the rivers of France last year."

Lowe collapsed during the 10-kilometer Memorial Day race and could not be revived. He had bypass surgery about five or six years ago, friends said.

Lowe had recently returned from doing a job for FEMA in Iowa.
