CENTENNIAL - Denver Broncos player David Kircus threw a punch, investigators say, then left a warning for the man with the broken face.

"You don't know what I'm capable of," the backup wide receiver told Jeffrey Krieger, according to a report by an Arapahoe County sheriff's deputy.

Krieger, 26, had escorted Kircus from a house in Centennial's Foxridge neighborhood at about 4:25 a.m Sunday after Kircus had a disagreement with a woman who had invited him over, the report said.

Kircus was booked into the Arapahoe County jail Monday morning after surrendering at the sheriff's office. He was released after posting $6,000 bail and is facing a charge of second-degree assault, a felony punishable by up to six years in prison.

Krieger was released from a local hospital after minor surgery.

According to the deputy's report, Kircus punched Krieger in the eye, "causing multiple fractures" to his face.

Kircus, 27, had been invited to the house at 8245 S. Krameria Way but was asked to leave several times, the report said.

Once outside, Kircus told Krieger that "because they were no longer on private property (Krieger) was no longer protected," according to the report.

Arapahoe County sheriff's Capt. Brice Moomaw said only a few people were at the house during the altercation and that Kircus "either knew of them or knew some of them." Moomaw would not elaborate on what the disagreement at the house was about.

Kircus did not return a call seeking comment.

Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said that what Kircus told him differs from what Krieger told investigators.

"We're going to let due process take care of itself," Shanahan said. "Like all situations, there's two sides to every story."

However, Shanahan also said that Kircus could lose his job with the team if the allegations prove to be true.

"Obviously, if he didn't handle himself the right way, he won't be with us," he said.

Kircus, due in court this morning in Arapahoe County, has hired attorney Harvey Steinberg, who is representing Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall on charges of domestic violence and false imprisonment.

Marshall was arrested in March after his girlfriend told police he was using a Dodge Charger to block a taxi she had summoned to go to the airport after the couple had spent the day arguing.

Kircus, who signed with the Broncos on Jan. 3, 2006, caught nine passes last season for 187 yards.
