School leader to investigate

Boulder school Superintendent George Garcia will investigate how a panel discussion on sex and drugs came to be held at Boulder High School.

A parent has complained to the board of education that the discussion was inappropriate.

The panel was part of the University of Colorado's annual World Affairs Conference.

Some WAC activities have traditionally been held at the high school, which is just across Boulder Creek from the campus.

Attendance always has been optional for the high school and CU students. In this case, attendance was mandatory for some high school students. That was a mistake, Garcia said in a statement Thursday.

School district spokesman Briggs Gamblin said a misunderstanding might have occurred because the previous faculty adviser retired and a new one took over.

Many of the panels during the weeklong WAC involve controversial ideas and speakers.

School officials want to know how this particular panel was chosen for the high school, Gamblin said. Garcia will report to the board May 22 or June 12.
