The Douglas County Sheriffs Office and Douglas County School District will hold a briefing for parents at 4 p.m. this afternoon in the school gym concerning an incident that closed the school this morning.
No one was hurt and no property was damaged, but Deputy Cocha Heyden said one student, identified as a junior class member by school officials, is in custody.
She said that shortly after 7 a.m., neighbors north of Ponderosa High School reported hearing firecrackers going off near an embankment behind the school.
Law enforcement responded and found nothing, but school leaders questioned students and received information about a potential suspect.
The student was questioned and chemicals allegedly were found inside the students backpack that could have been mixed to create another "small sound-making device," Heyden said.
Students were evacuated, and parents picked up students at the Church of Latter-day Saints property across the street from the school.
The school district brought in school buses to transport the students who would normally take the bus home.
