Denver prosecutors charged a young father with child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury Friday as his 2-month-old son clung to life in a local hospital.
Quentin Brown, 21, was arrested Sunday after the baby was hospitalized.
Prosecutors allege that the infant, who remains in critical condition, was the victim of shaken baby syndrome, said Lynn Kimbrough of the district attorney's office.
According to a court document, Brown told police that he woke up about 7 a.m. Sunday at his northeast Denver home to the crying of his son, and lifted him out of his crib.
Brown tried for several minutes to get the baby to stop crying and shook him twice, lifting him in a manner that caused his head to jerk violently, according to the court document.
Brown is being held on $25,000 bail.
If convicted of the charge, he could face up to 12 years in prison.
Another child in Brown's household was found to be in good condition and was placed with family members, the Denver Department of Human Services said.
