Senate Democrats today will propose that all low-income Colorado students receive free tuition within the Colorado State University system.
In addition, they want to freeze tuition rates for the middle-class.
"This is the golden ticket were offering," said Sen. Peter Groff, D-Denver.
The tuition break is designed to head off Republican opposition to another Democratic amendment to the budget. It allows CSU to raise rates above a 7 percent increase already allowed for in next years budget.
Some Republicans maintain that move could lead to a 43 percent increase for most undergraduates students.
The proposals are part of budget talks for next fiscal year under
way in the Senate.
