One of three weekend incidents in which men approached children is being investigated as an attempted abduction, Commerce City police said Wednesday.
Detectives don't believe the three incidents are related, Lt. Chuck Saunier said.
Detectives think the first encounter, which happened Friday afternoon, was an attempted abduction. An 8-year-old boy told police he was on the playground at Second Creek Elementary School, 9950 Laredo Drive, about 4:30 p.m. when a man driving a red Pontiac Grand Am parked nearby.
The boy walked over to the car because he thought the person inside might be a relative. As he got close, the driver told him, "Hop in, your mom said to give you a ride," police said.
The boy became frightened, ran home and told his mother.
In the second incident, a man asked a 9-year-old girl if she wanted to pet his dog which was in his SUV. The child got scared and returned home.
In the third incident, a car with two men inside pulled up beside two girls, both 7, near a park at East 117th Place and Fairplay Drive. When a parent hurried toward the children, the car drove away, police said.
