Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper is preparing to file for re-election to a second term this afternoon, one day ahead of the deadline.
Hickenlooper won his first term in 2003. One candidate, city worker Danny Lopez, beat the mayor to the punch and is already certified as a candidate.
But he has a way to go to win. Hickenlooper raised more than $112,000 for his re-election last month alone. Lopez says he plans to raise and spend no money on the campaign.
As mayor, Hickenlooper has launched an ambitious reform of the police department, launched the city on an environmentally sensitive campaign, helped lure the 2008 Democratic National Convention to Denver and has launched a major initiative aimed at eliminating homelessness.
He has come under recent criticism this winter for slow snow removal and took some of the blame for a flawed November election which saw Denver voters waiting as much as three hours to cast their ballots and weeks to learn results in some close races.
