The 14-year-old who died in a snowmobile accident Sunday was identified as Chancelor "Chance" Forsythe, of Highlands Ranch, by Summit County Coroner Joanne Richardson.
Forsythe was staying with his family in Vail and celebrating his birthday, which was Thursday, Richardson said.
Shortly after 11 a.m. Sunday, 911 paramedics received a report that a person riding a snowmobile on Vail Pass had struck a tree.
The teen, who was wearing a helmet and goggles, suffered injuries to his head, neck and chin, Richardson said.
"The helmet Forsythe wore was not approved for motorized sports," she said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Forsythe was a student at Rocky Heights Middle School in Highlands Ranch.
