Colorado man places 3rd in sled dog race

LINCOLN, Mont. - Mark Stamm of Riverside, Wash., won the 350-mile Race to the Sky sled dog race, crossing the finish line here with nine dogs early Tuesday afternoon.
Stamm, 49, a yacht painter, finished the race at 1:11 p.m., followed 52 minutes later by Warren Palfrey of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada.
''He's been in this race 11 times and he's placed a lot of times,'' Leonard Miner, who handle's Stamm's team, said hours before the finish. ''It's time to win it.
Tom Thurston of Oak Creek, Colo., finished in third place at 2:19 p.m.
Stamm finished second in the 2004 Race to the Sky and was third in 1994 and 2001. He withdrew last year after losing the trail on the first leg.
Martin Koenig of Seeley Lake finished fourth at 5:42 p.m. Tuesday with nine dogs, followed by Iditarod veteran Terry Adkins of Sand Coulee at 6:33 p.m. with eight dogs.
Bill Smith of Deer Lodge was sixth at 8:41 p.m., finishing with seven dogs, and Rob Greger finished the race a record 10th time, crossing in seventh place at 8:46 p.m. with all 12 of his dogs.
