Denver City Councilman at-large Doug Linkhart said Friday that he will run for re- election.
Linkhart has carved out niches on the City Council on key social issues and was a force in creating the city's Crime Prevention and Control Commission. He heads the powerful council safety committee.
The councilman raised eyebrows last year when he supported a measure that would legalize possession of small amounts of marijuana.
"I'm open to persuasion from the other side," Linkhart said at the time. "I never heard enough evidence that consuming small amounts of marijuana is a safety issue. Alcohol causes many more problems, as far as I know, compared to marijuana."
Linkhart served two years in the state House and eight in the state Senate before joining the council in 2003.
He won an extremely tight race to earn his seat on the council.
