Tim Gill, a Denver software entrepreneur and top Democratic political donor, has opened a Washington, D.C., office for his newly expanded political funding organization.

Gill, a leading national supporter of gay and lesbian causes, established a political issue committee, the Gill Action Fund, in August 2005. The committee funds pro-gay issues and election initiatives, including the recent failed ballot measure in Colorado that would have given gay couples many legal rights of spouses.

Last year, Gill hired former Massachusetts Republican lawmaker Patrick Guerriero as Gill Action's executive director.

The group has now expanded to seven employees, including Chief Operating Officer Robin Brand. She is a national Democratic operative who most recently served as an executive at the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, a national organization that funds gay and lesbian political candidates.

Gill Action also hired Bill Smith, a political consultant who formerly worked for Karl Rove and has done extensive media production for political candidates across the country. Smith will serve as Gill Action's national political director.

Gill Action is a separate entity from Gill's philanthropy organization, the Gill Foundation. The latter group cannot fund candidates.
