Former Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders will deliver the keynote address Monday at the Iliff School of Theology's annual Leadership Conference.

Elders will speak on "Religion and Globalization" at 12:30 p.m. at Four Points Hotel by Sheraton, 6363 E. Hampden Ave.

Elders' lecture is free, but the lunch is $40. The three-day conference runs through Wednesday.

Known as one of President Clinton's most outspoken and controversial appointees, Elders startled the country by turning the usually staid job of surgeon general into a platform for advocating sex education and condom use.

In 1994, Elders was forced to resign amid a controversy following her remarks that masturbation was one solution for keeping teens from sexually transmitted diseases.

"I told someone, 'I went to Washington feeling like prime steak, and I left feeling like low-grade hamburger,' " she told CNN at the time.

A biochemist by training, Elders speaks on topics such as universal health care, women's issues and globalization.

Other speakers at the Iliff conference include former U.S. Ambassador Swanee Hunt and longtime Denver civic leader Polly Baca.

The fee to attend the whole conference is $199. About 200 people are expected to attend.
