Top dog in Denver and the nation is the Labrador retriever, according to the American Kennel Club.

The club announced the "Top 10" most popular registered dogs in Denver for 2006, the PRNewswire reports this morning.

The Lab has been the most popular purebred dog in the country since 1991.

In Denver, the golden retriever takes second place. But nationwide the Yorkshire terrier has pushed the golden down to fourth place behind the German shepherd.

In Denver, the boxer is fourth, followed by the bulldog, dachshund, German shorthaired pointer, Yorkshire terrier, poodle and pug.

Nationwide it's the lab followed by the "Yorkie," then the German shepherd, golden retriever, beagle, dachshund, boxer, puddle, Shih Tzu and miniature schnauzer.

Among the least registered dogs in Denver are the Dandie Dinmont terrier, the Clumber spaniel and the Finnish spitz.

"Denver bucks the national trend when it comes to two of its favorite breeds, the German shorthaired pointer and the bulldog," AKC spokeswoman Lisa Peterson said in a statement.

"Mile High City residents are energetic, outdoor enthusiasts who chose sporting breeds such as the top ranked Labrador and golden retriever, more often than other breeds for their active lifestyle."
