Two boys, 16 and 14, were arrested for setting off an explosive device in the cafeteria at Green Mountain High School.
Cindy Matthews, spokeswoman for West Metro Fire, said they used common household materials to design a small explosive device, brought it to school and assembled in the cafeteria, then detonated it.
Fellow students were shocked when they heard the small explosion, she said.
When the device exploded, the security guard notified the School Resource Officer who called Lakewood police. West Metro Fire Investigators are investigating the incident.
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office assisted by helping West Metro Fire Investigators at the home of one of the students.
The teenagers were arrested yesterday for investigation of unlawful possession of weapons on school grounds, possession/use of an explosive or incendiary device, and reckless endangerment.
Both boys have been expelled from the school and currently are being held in the Mountview Detention Facility awaiting a court appearance.
