Drivers sue over Mountain View tickets

Seven people ticketed by Mountain View police while driving north on Sheridan Boulevard have filed a federal lawsuit accusing the department of taking in thousands of dollars for violations outside its jurisdiction.

The lawsuit accuses Police Chief Eric Gomez and three officers of generating "untold amounts of revenue" for the town of about 600, which comprises about 12 blocks between 41st and 44th avenues just west of Sheridan Boulevard.

In May, Gomez told CBS 4 News that the department had stopped issuing tickets for the northbound lane of Sheridan between 41st and 44th because that area is within Denver’s boundaries.

The plaintiffs in the case each received tickets with fines ranging from $95 to $300. They are seeking damages, the amount of which would be determined by a judge or jury.

Gomez referred calls this afternoon to city attorney Kendra Carberry, who said it was too early for comment.
