Three high school cheerleaders were arrested at the Air Force Academy for a prank last Friday, according to the Colorado Springs Gazette.
The girls, who have not been identified, used paper to cover the first five letters of a sign at Douglass Valley Elementary School, which is located on the AFA grounds.
The prank occurred as parents were arriving for last Friday's game between the Air Academy High School and Wasson High School.
The Air Force Academy's 10th Security Forces Squadron made the arrests and took the girls to jail, where they were told to remove their shoelaces and were patted down by a female officer, said academy spokesman Meade Warthen. Warthen said the pat down and the removal of shoelaces were standard procedure.
The girls are students at Air Academy, said spokeswoman Nanette Anderson. Anderson said the arrests and detentions were an overreaction.
The girls were later released to their parents. Anderson said the security officers refused to let school officials handle the incident.
The AFA has agreed, after the girls' parents expressed concern, to let Peterson Air Force Base review the handling of the incident.
