Smoke alarm saves Arvada resident

An Arvada townhouse was destroyed in a fire early this morning, but the resident escaped because he heard his smoke alarm, Arvada Fire Protection District spokesman Scott Pribble reported.
Firefighters responded to 6875 W. 84th Way at 1:45 a.m. and found one unit at the end of a 10-unit, U-shaped building, was showing heavy smoke and flames on the first and second floors.
With the help of Arvada police, all units were evacuated and fire
crews kept the blaze from spreading to adjacent units.
The fire was declared under control at 2:05 am.
Pribble said the resident heard his smoke alarm going off and initially thought that it was a dream.
He then saw the smoke and fire outside his window and was able to escape just as the fire broke through the glass in the patio door.
Neighbors reported hearing a small explosion that awakened them to
the fire.
The Arvada Fire Marshalls office currently is investigating the
cause.
