Hundreds of volunteers spanned across Colorado on Monday to conduct the first statewide count of the homeless in 17 years.

The census, a snapshot of the homeless on a single night in the summer, is intended to help state and local governments understand what causes homelessness so they can develop a plan to fight it.

The Colorado Interagency Council on Homelessness, a collaboration of state and federal agencies spearheading the effort, plans to take another count in January.

"One of the things we're trying to do is get better numbers so we can plan housing and services," said Lynn Shine, housing initiative coordinator for the state Division of Housing.

"Also, it'll allow nonprofit agencies and those who seek grants to have information on the homeless population they serve," she said.
