GRAND JUNCTION U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., is coming to the Western Slope today to endorse 3rd Congressional District GOP candidate Scott Tipton, who is calling for tough measures against illegal immigrants.
Tancredo has made himself a national figure on the issue, and Tipton is highlighting it as a centerpiece of his underdog campaign against Rep. John Salazar, D-Colo. Tancredo has appearances scheduled in Grand Junction and Montrose.
Lois Dunn, Mesa County Republican chairwoman, said illegal immigration is ''a huge issue, probably the biggest.''
She said while many voters are ''highly emotional'' about the issue, farmers and homebuilders are worried that a crackdown on illegals would make it more difficult to find employees.
''It's tough for older people in nursing homes,'' she said. ''I have people tell me their mom was born before there were birth certificates so there's no way to show she's lived her all her life.''
