It appears to be a variation on one of the Internets most common scams.
An unidentified victim reported to sheriff's deputies about being out $700, suckered by an ad in a periodical for Maltese puppies. The ad directed the victim to a website, the victim picked out a pup and sent away $700.
No puppy arrived.
When investigators with the Montrose County sheriff's office checked with the FBI, they were told there have been enough complaints about the operation the have given it a name, the ''Nigerian puppy scam.''
Let the buyer beware, said sheriff's investigator Miles Bailey.
''People outside of our country don't have to abide by our laws,'' he said.
