LEADVILLE Two thousand cyclists crossed the finish line in the 157-mile Courage Classic this afternoon, raising about $1.7 million for Childrens Hospital, event organizers said.
The event has been held for the past 17 years and is a significant source of funding for the hospital and its programs.
Many of the participants have overcome illnesses and other challenges.
Meaghan Cusack of Littleton was 10 years old when she was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma in her right leg.
She went through eight months of chemo treatments, a tibia replacement and was pronounced cancer free. Four months later she relapsed. After more chemo, the doctors amputated her right leg. She was given a prosthetic limb that gave her the chance to become active again.
Today she finished the event for the second time.
