Cherry Creek Arts Fest honors Chicago photog

Jurors for the 2006 Cherry Creek Arts Festival have named the work of Chicago photographer Scott Gruss best-of-show for the annual event, which continues through today.

Awards also include a second- place honor to jewelry makers Gael and Howard Silverblatt, of Lake Worth, Fla., and third place to John Whipple, of Winter Park, Fla., who showed in both the painting and sculpture categories of the festival.

Merit awards went to Sharon Brush, of Gila, N.M., in ceramics; Charles Gatewood, of Phenix City, Ala., in painting; Leon Niehues, of Huntsville, Ark., in fiber; Rachel Zamek, of Orlando, Fla., in mixed media; David Nagel, of Jackson, Miss., in wood; and Les Slesnick, of Orlando, Fla., in photography.

The jurors also gave their own awards. Blake Milteer's award went to Yang Yang, of Prior Lake, Minn., in painting; Ivar Zeile recognized Holly Anne Mitchell, of St. Petersburg, Fla., in jewelry; and Sandy Blain's award went to Kate Rothra Fleming, of Charleston, S.C., in jewelry.

Blain is professor emeritus of art at the University of Tennessee, Milteer is curatorial assistant at the Denver Art Museum and an instructor at the University of Colorado at Denver, and Zeile is owner of + gallery.
