Sen. Ken Salazar, D-Denver, was optimistic when leaving the bipartisan meeting at the White House, after which Senate leaders were hopeful about pushing a comprehensive immigration bill through the U.S. Senate by Memorial Day.
"It gives us some new hope that everything we worked on before recess will not go away," Salazar told reporters, referring to a tentative agreement on legislation that bogged down over a long list of proposed amendments earlier this month.
He also praised Presient Bush for his role in the meeting.
Salazar said Bush told lawmakers: "I want comprehensive immigration reform. I want you to help get that out of the Senate and I want to be as helpful as I can. He's saying what he should be saying," Salazar said.
