News photography editor wins award

Janet Reeves, director of photography for the Rocky Mountain News, has been named 2006 Newspaper Picture Editor of the Year for large newspapers by the National Press Photographers Association.
Reeves won first place for a portfolio of work she edited. She also won first place in picture editing a special section for "Final Salute," a 24-page special section by writer Jim Sheeler and photographer Todd Heisler documenting the work of Marines whose job is to notify and care for the families of those killed in the line of duty.
"Final Salute" also has won the non-deadline online journalism award in the Sigma Delta Chi competition sponsored by the National Society of Professional Journalists. Forrest Stewart, a Web producer for RockyMountainNews.com, Sonya Doctorian, video documentarian and photo editor, Heisler and Sheeler won the award for the multi-media presentation of the series online.
In the NPPA competition, Reeves also won first and second places in single-page picture editing for a documentary photojournalism project for "Final Salute."
Heisler won three first-place awards picture story, general news and enterprise for "Final Salute" photos in the photojournalism category.
Stewart and Doctorian won first place in multi-media package for "Final Salute."
In the team category of picture editing for large newspapers, the News won second place with editing by Reeves, Doctorian, Dean Krakel, Mark Osler, Brian James and Jay Quadracci.
Krakel won second place in single-presentation picture editing of photos of a natural disaster for Hurricane Katrina photos.
Doctorian won second place in multiple-page picture editing for a documentary photojournalism project for "Early Exit: Denver's graduation gap," a five-part series about the low high school graduation rates in Denver Public Schools.
Osler won third place for picture editing of a front page.
In another competition, Heisler's work on "Final Salute" also earned him a Gold Prize in the China International Press Photo Contest. Heisler was honored in the series category in the "daily life" division of the contest.
