LITTLETON

For new parents, baby's rescuers were heaven-sent

A couple whose premature baby girl was saved by police and firefighters have named her Nevaeh - heaven spelled backward - and named her Littleton rescuers godparents of their baby.

Littleton police who were called to an apartment in the 5500 block of South Hill Street Tuesday morning found a woman who was six months pregnant had just given birth. The baby was still in the amniotic sac, said Littleton police spokesman Sean Dugan.

After officer Bob Carmody removed the baby from the amniotic sac with sterile gloves, he gave the infant to officer Al Quintana, who ran down three flights of stairs and handed the baby to the paramedics who had just arrived, Dugan said.

The paramedics attached a breathing tube to the infant and were able to stabilize her on the way to Littleton Hospital.

Nevaeh, who weighed 1 pound, 5 ounces at birth, is doing fine and will remain hospitalized until she reaches about 6 pounds, Dugan said.
