ARAPAHOE COUNTY - Deputies arrested a burglary suspect early Wednesday after he fled from a homeowner who fired a gun.
The suspect has been identified as Kris Gibson, 22.
Deputies received a report of a burglary in the 16000 block of East Maplewood Avenue at 4:32 a.m., said Capt. Brice Moomaw, of the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office.
The homeowner woke up when he heard a noise. He searched the house and saw a man in the upstairs hallway. The suspect ran down the stairs and fell, hitting his head on the floor.
The suspect ran out the door and fell again. He hit his head on a rock, leaving behind a bloody trail, sheriff's investigators said.
The homeowner grabbed a rifle and went outside. He fired a shot into the ground near where the suspect was fleeing.
The suspect then ran about three blocks to a nearby field near the 6100 block of South Olathe Street, Moomaw said. Deputies used a dog to track the suspect, and arrested him.
The suspect was treated at the scene for severe head injuries and was taken to Parker Adventist Hospital.
Deputies found the family's jewelry outside the home.
