White River

Why here? The river offers miles of good, relatively uncrowded fishing for rainbow, cuttbow and cutthroat trout in northwestern Colorado.

What's hot? Grasshoppers are abundant along the river; trout are looking up for an easy, floating meal.

Tackle box: Grasshopper- imitating dry flies; Copper John, Pheasant Tail and Hare's Ear nymphs. Small spinners for lure casters.

Best times: Midmorning through late afternoon.

How to get there: From Denver, go west on Interstate 70 to Rifle. Go north on Colorado 13 to Meeker. From Meeker, go east on Rio Blanco County Road 8, which parallels the river.

Ask the experts: Wyatt's Sports Center in Meeker, 970-878-4428.
