The Denver-based Alliance for Choice in Education will award $1.7 million in scholarships to enable poor children to attend private schools this year.
The group, founded by businessman Alex Cranberg, has been awarding scholarships since 2000. This year, awards will go to 800 kids. The number of students and the amount of money is a record for ACE.
Most of the students were having trouble in public schools, said ACE executive director Norton Rainey.
The majority of students are from Denver. Two thirds are in families that earn under $23,107 a year.
About 40 percent use the scholarships in Catholic schools. They can also attend small neighborhood schools.
